I was asked to teach a 2-3-hour crochet class for complete beginners that would allow them to complete an article in class. This is no easy feat and after wracking my brains (also no easy feat!) I decided to teach a 3-round granny square because even if somebody only completed one they would have a coaster! Naturally I wrote a pattern with a chart to accompany the class.

After I taught the classes I decided it would be useful if the written pattern also had some photos to help students remember the steps in the stitches used. It would also be handy to have the whole pattern available as a left-handed version with a left-handed chart and photos. I also decided to make a short series of videos to help remind beginners what they'd learned later when I wasn't around to help them. My hubby got a new cell phone so we thought we'd give it a try for shooting a video and if it was at least useful (if not cinematically award-winning) we'd make it available - warts'n'all.

There are some special techniques used (beginning with a magic ring, beginning rounds with standing trebles and using the finishing tail to end a round "invisibly") to make these granny squares just a little better than the average granny square you can find patterns for everywhere. The video also shows how I weave in the tails and close-up enough that you can really see where the tails are being woven in. The series has a short introductory video followed by two videos each for Rounds 1, 2 and 3.

If you are left-handed and want to crochet left-handed then I recommend setting up a mirror at right angles to your screen so you can watch the videos in the mirror. It will make it look like you are watching a left-handed crocheter.
